"Classic abseil"

The rope comes down from the top and then in between your legs, behind
your thigh (usually the right, if the right hand is to control), across
your chest, over (left) shoulder and back to the (right) hand. It's not
very comfy, especially if you're wearing Tracksters or the like, but it
does work okay. Can be a useful skill for a time saving in a few cases
if a short and easy ab is all that's needed.

http://www.instructables.com/id/SE2BTK3F4FBB0SC/ shows you how. Might
be a Cunning Plan to work with an independent safety rope for getting
the hang of it. As when abbing with a descender, it's the lower hand
that's really providing the stopping power and control.

Pete.

Definitely can be a bit painful in my experience.

I once saw a RAF Mountain Rescue guy abseil near Broadstand. H e came
down at a great rate of knots .. hit the ground rucsac first .. which
set off his day/night flare .. hilarious :-)

Done it myself - don't bother, too painful ;-). Take a sling and Krab
and use an Italian Hitch. Face it, if you are carrying a rope, what's
the extra weight of a sling and krab?

I've done it (over a very short drop) and found it ok. I guess it varies a
fair bit depending on the rope and what you're wearing.

Steepness is also a factor - if there's any possibility of a 'free' abseil
(ie: if the rock is vertical or steeper, or there are any overhangs etc.) a
classic abseil is very dodgy indeed.

Didn't you learn thow to abseil in the "SAS" Jake?

I'm SASR trained hand-to-hand sniper. I don't know anyone in the world
who is more deadly that with that training. "
